This is the only move played in the available games. An alternative would be 16...Ne8 17.Kd2 f6 (17...Nc7 18.Bd6 Rfe8 19.g4 Bg6 20.Na4+–) 18.e4 Bh7 (18...Bg6 19.exd5 exd5) 19.exd5 exd5 20.Re1 Nc7 21.h4±.

Another good move is 17.g4! Bg6 (17...Bh7 18.Kd2 e5 19.Bh2 Re7 20.Ra4 Ne8 21.Rb4 Rb8 22.Bxe5 Nxe5 23.dxe5 Nc7 24.f4±) 18.Kd2 e5 19.Bg3 exd4 20.exd4 Nf8 21.h4 Ne6 22.Ra4+– Bagheri-Haznedaroglu, Beijing rapid 2008.

Kamsky himself varied not long ago with an inferior (!) move: 17.Kf2!? e5 18.Bh2 exd4 19.exd4 Bc2 20.Be2 Nf8 21.Rhc1 (Kamsky-Yudin, St Petersburg blitz 2018), and even though this also resulted in a clear advantage to White, it isn’t as strong as the other options.

17...e5 18.Bh2 exd4!?

Opening the e-file isn’t good, because Black will be unable to attack the d4-pawn. Also bad was 18...Re7 19.Ra4 Ne8 20.Rb4 Rb8 21.g4 Bg6 22.Bxe5+– Khoroshev-Al Aqrabi, Batumi 2018.

It was better to defend with either 18...Nh7 19.g4 Bg6 20.h4 Nhf8 21.Ra4 Ne6 22.Rb4 Bh7 23.Rg1 g5 24.hxg5 hxg5 25.Ne2± or even 18...e4 19.g4 Be6 20.f4 g6 21.Be2 Nh7 22.f5 gxf5 23.gxf5 Bxf5 24.Bf4±.
